Kenya’s affordable Kshs 5,000 smartphone could be ready by August – CS Owalo

Kenya could witness the launch of its first locally-designed and manufactured smartphone as soon as August 2023, the Cabinet Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy, Eliud Owalo, has revealed.

Speaking during an interview at Citizen TV, CS Owalo revealed that manufacturing of the affordable Kenyan smartphone is expected to start as soon as July with tangible results expected to be seen by August.

The Kenyan smartphone dream is a drive by the President Ruto-led Kenya Kwanza coalition government meant to spearhead the country’s drive to be a manufacturing hub as well as accelerate the drive to make the country a digital economy centre.

The Kenyan smartphone, expected to cost just USD 40, will be manufactured at the Konza Technopolis.

Konza Technopolis is a planned technology city located about 60 kilometres south of the capital, Nairobi, that was mooted by President Kibaki’s government as part of its plans to achieve several goals and milestones that would propel Kenya to middle-income economic status by the year 2030 in an economic blueprint dubbed Vision 2030.
