Spotify Wrapped 2022: Lilmaina’s Kishash is the most streamed Kenyan song

For the second year in a row, Drake is the most streamed artist in Kenya

After Apple’s Replay 2022, here comes the big boy: Spotify Wrapped 2022.

Unlike Apple Replay 2022 where we lacked country-specific insights for our market, Spotify is not only offering individuals a look at their music streaming habits throughout 2022 but also our collective music streaming habits as a nation.

For the second year in a row, Canadian artist Drake is the most streamed artist in Kenya in a top 5 lineup that only features one African artist, Nigeria’s Burna Boy who ranks second, as can be seen in the grids below.

Burna Boy’s ‘Love, Dlamini’ album is the most streamed in Kenya on Spotify this year.

There are lots to take away for Kenya from Spotify Wrapped.

“Local music consumption is showing no signs of slowing down, registering a 184% year-on-year increase from 2022, an encouraging figure that shows that Kenyans do stream local music,” a statement from Spotify notes.

Here are other insights as captured by Spotify in their statement:

  • The top streamed local artist is popular boy band Sauti Sol. They are followed by Wakadinali and Buruklyn Boyz. The latter are part of Spotify’s Radar Africa programme. Radar is Spotify’s initiative aimed at shining a spotlight on emerging voices around the world and exposing them to its massive global audience.
  • The most streamed Kenyan song this year is Kishash by Lilmaina followed by Geri Inengi by Wakadinali featuring Sir Bwoy (you may know that song by its popular lyric ‘Subaru ya mambaru imekam na imejaa’).

  • Kenyans stream music the most on Spotify on Fridays.
  • Kenyans stream music the most at midday and at 6pm. Huh.
  • This is the most popular Spotify-curated African playlist in Kenya.

Spotify, which has had an official presence on the African continent since 2018, entered the Kenyan market in early 2021 as part of its global expansion.

Since then, it has gone on to an expansive marketing blitz in the country as it raises awareness of its offering to the public, something that Wrapped 2022 is likely to extend further.

In the country, the music streaming service offers users several packages to upgrade to its Premium subscription from the ad-supported free tier that is accessible to all.

Spotify’s Wrapped 2022 features messages from artists to their listeners, an addition to the usual cards meant for sharing on social media that we have gotten used to over the years. “Fans can also unlock a personalized Snapchat lens that reflects their listening personality and those active in the Roblox universe, can head to Spotify Island for even more fun and games,” notes Spotify.

Open the Spotify app on your phone and you should get the prompt to see your Wrapped 2022 or click this link from your mobile browser (Spotify Wrapped 2022 isn’t available on desktop) to access your Spotify Wrapped 2022.
